Why This Blog Exists
January 3, 2023
I was reading Ben Kuhn’s recent post on writing and feel compelled to comment on why this blog exists.
The purpose of this blog is the entertain its author, nothing else.
I think Ben’s blog post is about building some kind of network around your blog. That’s fine and I encourage Ben an others to follow this path if they like. But this blog exists only for me. It doesn’t really have a purposeful narrative and I’m not interested what it makes other people think.
I don’t have comments enabled. This is for two reasons. First, I’d have to actually figure out how to integrate my hugo generated pages with some commenting service. Which would take effort I don’t want to spend. Second, I don’t actually want to have a public conversation with anyone about my posts. The primary audience for my blog is myself and I don’t need blog comments to engage with myself.
There is a resume page on this blog. I don’t think anyone reads it. Most recruiters likely only review at my linkedin. Part of the reason this page was originally created was to help me with my job hunt. I felt that a portfolio site was important to my job prospects. Having maintained the site for a while now I still semi-maintain the resume page but I don’t think they get much if any traffic.
I actually received feedback on a few of my tech notes in the past as the post was
- Poorly written
- Technically inaccurate
The feedback was 100% correct. But I ignored this feedback because I didn’t care. The posts aren’t for others they’re for me. I enjoy going back and seeing the “bad” posts because they remind me of the gaps in my knowledge and show how easy it is to produce incomprehensible text. I’m fine with this. I do go back and edit posts when I feel like it. Sometimes I ignore the errors. It mostly depends on my mood.
This blog is an exercise in narcissism. I tool to record a few things about myself. Its a little different then a private diary or journal because I’m writing in semi-public. This gives it a little different flavor.
There are three techincal changes I would like to make to the blog in the future
- I should probably support TLS. This is more me being lazy then anything else. While I think probably most things on the public internet should be encrypted I just can’t justify it for this blog. I have fond memories to the old crappy text based internet and having my blog operate this way entertains me.
- I should publish and RSS or ATOM feed. If someone wants to subscribe to this blog right now they can’t. Since my audience is myself this seems fine to me, but I should probably support this.
- Add some sort of web analytics to see if this site gets any traffic at all. I did register with Google at some point. But I’ve done zero SEO and I don’t link others to my blog typically. But it would be interesting to see if anyone is visiting my dusty corner of the internet at all.
I give myself a 25% chance I’ll actually make these changes :D
