A Random Update
August 30, 2026
I don’t really blog, I think the issue is this is a weird sort of semi public journal. Its not private enough to keep a personal diary and its not public enough to force me to update it.
The last six months have been very busy. Tigris grew 10x over the last year. It has been a lot of work. It’s cut significantly into the time I used to spend doing other things. I enjoy working on something that shows progress and I like the impact I can have at a startup but its rather demanding.
I did teach some sailing this summer, about two weeks worth. Which is good, but I’m not sure I’m getting a lot of personal satisfaction from it. I think I should be spending more time with my wife and kids, at least while I’m working so much. I think I’d regret it if I didn’t participate in in the Sailing School and Sailing Club but my time is stretched thin right now.
Claire graduated high school in the spring and yesterday we moved her out to University of Madison Wisconsin. She’s going there to become a elementary teacher. I hurt a bit walking away from her at her dorm. Its hard when then grow up but there’s nothing you can do. You can’t keep them longer - that doesn’t work, but letting go is hard. I came home feeling sad and the minor regrets that one has: wishing that I had spent more time with her while she was younger and at home. Claire will do great things without me, I just wish I could have held on to her a little longer. The house is a bit emptier now with her gone. Charlotte is with us another two years but I know how time passes now. It will go by quick.
I think Claire moving out and it being the end of the summer has made me a bit reflective. I’m nervous about what I should do with my life once my children move on from my home. I know they will still want me involved with them, but I’ll have time for other things. What should it be? I have no idea.
The development of the AI economy grinds on. I’m spending more time chatting with my computer to complete tasks rather then doing detailed work like writing code. The AI seems to take vague top level direction rather well and can use context to mostly figure out what it should do. Years ago I didn’t think AI would really be a thing in my lifetime. Now humans have created it and it makes me worry some. How is this going to change my life? My children’s? The last 20 years of the internet has given us a lot of benefits probably mostly good, but it sped life up a lot. How much more will AI speed things up, how painful will this be?
A lot of things are changing, both in my life and the world in general. Sometimes I wish I could hide from it and have the next month and year be the same as the previous one. Give myself a little more time to appreciate the day to day and less spend less time felling the pressure to deliver what comes next.
